Main Season for Harvesting Acai Berries
I n tropical conditions, it takes about four years for the Acai palm to bear fruit. In the Amazon rainforest of Brazil, harvest season for Acai runs from December to August but the natives generally make their harvest twice each year during that period. In sub tropical condition, the main season for harvesting Acai berries is during fall. In the U.S. harvest time usually begins in September. However, under ideal conditions, it is possible to harvest Acai berries all year-round. In South America, Acai berries are harvested by hand for generations. The Amazon rainforest is a flooded tidal area and there is no mechanized method to harvest Acai. The natives have to climb the tree trunk which can grow to as high as 30 meters. At the top, the branched panicles containing the Acai berries are chopped off and slowly brought to the ground. The berries are then hand-picked and stored in baskets which are then shipped to drop-off points or transported to processing facilities to manufacture Acai based products. Only about 70 percent of the berries are harvested as they either fall to the ground or consumed by birds and other animals. Of the harvested Acai, the natives keep about a third for their personal consumption. Today, entire villages are responsible for the mass production of Acai berries. However, with the ever increasing demand for this super fruit, Acai farms have been established outside South America, particularly in tropical countries in southeast Asia like Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines.
After harvesting the Acai berries, it is essential to consume them within two days at the most. Acai berries will spoil within twenty four hours of harvest if it is not processed in time. Because of its relatively short lifespan, Acai producers must ensure that the entire process – from harvesting to shipping and manufacturing – takes place in no more than 24 hours. Otherwise, some special techniques should be used to store the berries such as freeze drying and other flash cooling methods. With regard to processing, there are several things that can happen to the pulp when it has been separated from the seed. This largely depends on what type of product the Acai berries will end up. The pulp can be sold for a number of food dishes in Brazil and the surrounding areas or it can be freeze dried and turned into a powder form for further processing. Some of the Acai berries will be distributed to companies that will use the freeze dried or powdered product as the main component of health supplements. Some companies mix the Acai berry powder with other substances while others use the pure powder all on its own.
